Air Peace Launches Nigeria’s First Direct Flight to South America

Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest airline, now offers direct flights between Lagos and São Paulo, Brazil—the first regular air link between Nigeria and South America—following a Bilateral Air Services Agreement during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s August 2025 state visit to Brazil. This milestone is set to boost trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the regions.

According to the United Nations COMTRADE database, trade between Nigeria and Brazil reached significant levels in 2024, with Nigerian exports to Brazil totaling US$880.43 million and Brazilian exports to Nigeria amounting to US$977.5 million.

Air Peace operated the inaugural demonstration flight on 27 August 2025, using a Boeing 777 aircraft that welcomed members of Nigeria’s delegation alongside key Brazilian private-sector leaders, signaling readiness to operationalize this corridor.

Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, highlighted the extraordinary transformation: what once took nearly 20 hours via Europe or the Middle East is now a streamlined journey of approximately seven hours, saving nearly half a day of travel.

Air Peace Chairman, Allen Onyema, lauded the move as “opening the door to the future” for Nigeria, ushering in direct access to South America’s largest economy and reinforcing mutually beneficial ties between the continents.

Under the agreement, Air Peace will operate passenger services, and Cavertin Airlines will run cargo operations on the route. Both carriers expect to begin scheduled flights before the end of the year.

Air Peace’s order of 21 Embraer jets from Brazil coincides with the route’s launch, reinforcing long-term aviation and commercial collaboration.

Air Peace Chairman, Allen Onyema emphasized that the Lagos–São Paulo connection positions Nigeria as a strategic gateway between West and Central Africa and South America, unlocking new corridors for investment and mobility.

This pioneering air corridor offers more than convenience—it acts as a catalyst for growth:

  • Trade Enabler: The direct link dramatically reduces transit times for perishable goods, facilitating quicker and more reliable trade between Nigeria’s manufacturing and agricultural sectors and Brazilian markets.
  • Tourism Boost: Brazil’s São Paulo is now more accessible to Nigerians, supporting deeper cultural engagement and educational collaboration.

This route demonstrates a commitment to equitable partnership, supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President of Nigeria and advancing diversified international alliances.

  • Curated Experiences: Experience travel packages that blend city tours and Afro-Brazilian culture.
  • Corporate Efficiency: Access direct business tours, trade missions, and streamlined cargo logistics.
  • Logistics & Legal Guidance: Benefit from customs help and regulatory support for smooth travel.
  • Medical & Birth Tourism: The route offers Nigerians convenient access to Brazil’s medical facilities, providing alternatives to Turkey or the UK for healthcare or maternity, with fewer visa barriers.

The Lagos–São Paulo route marks a pivotal moment in Nigerian aviation. With direct flights, strategically negotiated deals, and infrastructure expansion, this corridor becomes a tangible conduit for cross-continental connectivity.
