UK to Introduce eVisas for Nigerian Study and Work Visa Applicants from July 15, 2025
The United Kingdom is set to launch a fully digital visa system for Nigerian nationals applying for study and work visas, starting July 15, 2025.
In a statement released by the British High Commission in Abuja, the UK announced that most new applicants in these categories will begin receiving eVisas—a secure, online record of their immigration status—instead of the traditional visa vignette (sticker) placed in their passports.
This change is part of the UK government’s initiative to modernise its immigration system and streamline entry processes for travellers worldwide.
“From 15 July 2025, individuals applying to enter the UK on study or work-related visas will no longer receive a physical visa sticker in their passport,” the statement read. “Instead, successful applicants will be issued an eVisa to access and manage online.”

What Nigerian Applicants Need to Know
- Applications submitted before July 15, 2025: These will continue to follow the current system, requiring passport submission at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) and issuance of a physical vignette.
- Applications submitted on or after July 15, 2025: Successful applicants will receive an email from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) with instructions to create a UKVI account, where they can access and manage their eVisa.
- Biometric enrolment remains mandatory: Applicants will still need to visit a VAC to provide fingerprints and photographs.
- Visit visas not affected: This update applies only to study and work visas. Tourists and other short-term visitors will continue to receive physical visa vignettes for the time being.
Why the UK Is Going Digital
The rollout of eVisas reflects the UK’s commitment to building a secure, efficient, and user-friendly digital immigration system. For Nigerian students and professionals, this means a simplified visa process and easier management of immigration status while in the UK.
Application fees remains unchanged at this time.
