Mauritius to Introduce €3 Per-Night Tourist Tax from October 2025

In a recent announcement as part of its 2025–2026 national budget, Mauritius has revealed plans to implement a €3 (approximately £2.57) per-night tourist tax, effective 1 October 2025. This charge will apply to all international travellers aged 12 and older who stay in designated accommodations. The primary goal of this initiative is to bolster sustainable tourism, enhance infrastructure, and protect the island’s environment and cultural heritage.

Starting from 1 October 2025, a tax of €3 per night will be levied on tourists aged 12 and above staying at accommodations such as hotels, guesthouses, tourist residences, and similar lodgings.

Children under 12 are exempt from this tax.

Based on data from 2023, the government projects this tax will generate approximately MUR 2 billion (around €38 million) annually. Hotels, guesthouses, and other lodging providers will be responsible for collecting the tax and submitting the collected amounts monthly to the Mauritius Revenue Authority.

The introduction of this tax serves not only as a source of revenue but also aims to fund significant improvements in public infrastructure, waste management, marine conservation, and overall visitor experience. By reinvesting proceeds from tourism into these vital areas, Mauritius seeks to redefine its tourism model to emphasise sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Mauritius is joining a growing list of destinations employing tourist levies to promote responsible travel and fund environmental initiatives. This trend is evident in locations such as the Maldives and Seychelles, aligning with the growing global emphasis on responsible tourism policies.

At €3 per night, the fee is modest compared to the overall costs associated with international travel. For families or extended stays, this fee could accumulate. Still, when balanced against the benefits of preserved natural beauty and enhanced facilities, it is unlikely to deter potential visitors to the island.

By implementing this tourist tax, Mauritius is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable, high-value tourism where ecological and cultural preservation is integral to economic growth. This policy reflects a long-term strategy aimed at enhancing infrastructure and preserving heritage for future generations. Your contribution through this tax will directly support these efforts, ensuring a more sustainable and beautiful Mauritius for future visitors.

While strong collaboration with tourism stakeholders is vital for this initiative, it’s crucial to address concerns about potential increases in travel costs for visitors. The benefits, like improved infrastructure and enhanced environmental protection, are significant.
