China to Open First National Museum Dedicated to African History and Culture

Beijing, 31 May 2025 — China has announced plans to establish its first national museum devoted exclusively to African history and culture, a project expected to redefine cultural tourism and scholarly exchange between the two regions.

The announcement was made by Ye Hailin, Director of the China–Africa Institute under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, during a workshop in Beijing titled “China–Africa Cooperation in the New Era: Responsibilities of Think Tanks and Media.” The event was organised by the International Department of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee.

While the museum’s exact location and opening timeline remain under discussion, officials describe it as a landmark project that will feature artefacts, artworks, and historical narratives from across Africa. Once completed, the museum is expected to strengthen cultural diplomacy while creating a new axis for cross-continental tourism routes linking Africa and China.

Several African-focused institutions currently operate in China, such as the Zhejiang Normal University Museum of African Culture, which was established in 2010. This initiative marks the first state-level public museum dedicated exclusively to Africa’s heritage.

Mr. Ye described the museum as an instrument for cultural diplomacy and education, noting that it will serve as a platform for both Chinese and African scholars, students, and tourists to engage with Africa’s diverse cultural legacies.

The museum forms part of a broader cultural, diplomatic and academic agenda under President Xi Jinping’s 2024 Beijing–Southeast Asia Partnership strategy, which includes the creation of five China–Africa research centres. One such centre is already being planned for South Africa, with consultations underway.

This initiative is not China’s inaugural engagement in cultural projects within Africa. In 2018, Beijing offered both technical and financial assistance for the establishment of the Museum of Black Civilisation in Dakar, Senegal, which has since emerged as one of the most significant cultural landmarks on the African continent.

African museum in China

For the tourism sector, the proposed museum is poised to become a cultural gateway for international travellers. Analysts anticipate:

  1. Expanded cultural itineraries for Chinese tourists seeking to understand Africa’s history without leaving Asia.
  2. Stronger academic tourism routes, including exchanges, study programs, and joint exhibitions.
  3. New opportunities for African travel agencies, particularly those offering curated cultural tours to Chinese markets.

As cross-continental travel continues to grow, the museum could emerge as both a diplomatic bridge and a tourist attraction, placing Africa’s diverse cultures in the heart of Beijing’s national cultural landscape.

As cultural tourism deepens its role in global travel, this development signals more than symbolic diplomacy—it’s a strategic invitation for African tourism operators to partner with China. For Afari Travels, we recommend clients and partners watch closely for:

  • Official announcements on the museum’s site and opening exhibitions.
  • Business Travels: Canton Fair season and China Business visa opportunities. We are currently offering assistance with both options with an exceptional success rate.
  • Collaborative tourism products linking African cultural destinations with new Chinese museum routes.
  • Opportunities for curated travel experiences that merge academic, artistic, and leisure tourism.

This museum represents a future where African cultural heritage will not only be celebrated on its own soil but also showcased at the highest national level abroad, expanding both influence and accessibility. It also highlights China’s efforts to foster a closer relationship with African nations.
