PETRA
Petra was a unique city inhabited by the Arabic people who once lived in the Jordan deserts. It is located in the territory between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba, in the mountains of the east side of the Wadi Araba. This city was a significant mark of the Silk route and other goods that were transported between Saudi Arabia, China, Greece, Egypt, Syria, and Rome. Today, this city is one wonder of the world and its main tourist attraction in the country.
Petra is the treasure of the ancient world, hidden behind an almost impenetrable barrier of rugged mountains. The rock-carved rose-red city of Petra is full of mysterious charm, and it was “designed to strike wonder into all who entered it”. It is the legacy of the Nabateans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2000 years ago. Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, Petra is now a UNESCO world heritage site and one of The New 7 Wonders of the World.
Things to do in Petra:
- Walk through the SIQ (the Siq is a rock divided 1200 meters in length, 3 to 12 meters in with and a height of 80 meters) and experience the magical city of the rocks at the entrance of the ruins of Petra;
- Visit the Al-khrazren treasury, one of the famous ruins of Petra; its natural beauty and architectural features would leave you in awe;
