The South African president, President Cyril Ramaphosa, during a briefing on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, announced that South Africa would ease some of its remaining COVID-19 restrictions. With effect from Wednesday, March 23, 2022, he scrapped out the mandatory negative PCR test results for fully-vaccinated travellers due to the decline in the rate of new COVID-19 infections and deaths in the country.
On the other hand, unvaccinated inbound travellers are mandated to take a COVID-19 PCR test not exceeding 72 hours before departure.
President Ramaphosa, “Travellers entering South Africa will need to show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test not older than 72 hours.” Previously, all travellers entering the country were required to produce a negative PCR test.
Internally, some restrictions and COVID-19 policies were eased. He announced that vaccinated individuals or those with a negative test result would be allowed back into sporting stadiums and music and theatre shows, which will be permitted to operate at half capacity.
Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu applauded the decision to scrap the PCR tests for fully vaccinated travellers. She reiterated that these changes would boost the tourism and hospitality industry in South Africa.
