Kenya and Angola have recently announced plans to ease visa restrictions, aiming to enhance air connectivity and bilateral trade. This follows a similar agreement between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo earlier this month.
The Kenya-Angola pact was confirmed after talks between Kenyan President William Ruto and his Angolan counterpart João Lourenço. The goal is to increase trade between the two nations, especially since trade has been on the rise in the past four years. They plan to push for direct air service between Nairobi and Luanda, the capitals of Kenya and Angola.
According to OAG Schedules Analyser data, there were nonstop flights between these nations until the onset of the pandemic in March 2020. Kenya Airways used to operate a weekly route between Nairobi and Luanda, but it hasn’t been reinstated in the airline’s network.
To encourage the resumption of direct flights, a visa-free regime will be put in place, allowing the free movement of people between Kenya and Angola. “Angolans coming to Kenya will not require a visa,” says President Ruto. “Angola will equally consider the same for Kenyans.”
Angola is preparing to open a new $3.8 billion airport in Luanda, known as Agostinho Neto International Airport, which is expected to boost air connectivity and economic development. The first phase of this airport is set to handle 15 million passengers per year, as well as a significant amount of cargo.
This visa-free regime and improved air connectivity aim to bolster trade and tourism between these countries. Additionally, it will promote cultural and economic ties, furthering cross-business and trade opportunities.
Similarly, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have agreed to adopt a visa-free regime and increase trade, further facilitating free movement of people. Uganda Airlines currently operates a nonstop route between Entebbe and Kinshasa, with five flights per week using CRJ 900 aircraft.
These efforts demonstrate the commitment of African nations to enhance connectivity and promote economic development and trade across the continent.
