Uganda Airlines, the national carrier of Uganda, has made history by launching its first flight from Entebbe International Airport to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria on October 19, 2023. The flight was welcomed by a water salute and a ceremony attended by dignitaries from both countries, including the Ugandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, the Nigerian Minister of Aviation, and the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
The flight is part of Uganda Airlines’ expansion plan to connect Uganda with other African countries and promote trade, investment and tourism. The airline operates four Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft and two Airbus A330-800neo aircraft, with plans to acquire more in the future. The airline offers competitive fares and quality service to its passengers, as well as a loyalty program and a mobile app.
The flight also coincided with the launch of a project by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support 40 women entrepreneurs from Uganda and Nigeria to access new markets and opportunities in both countries. The project, dubbed “Women Trade Champions”, aims to empower women to overcome the barriers they face in cross-border trade and contribute to the structural transformation of their economies.
The UNDP has produced a highlight video showcasing the stories and achievements of the women trade champions, who are involved in various sectors such as agriculture, fashion, handicrafts, cosmetics and tourism. The video also features interviews with officials from both governments and the private sector, who express their commitment to supporting women’s economic empowerment and regional integration.
The video can be watched on the UNDP’s website or social media platforms. The UNDP is dedicated to driving trade, investment and tourism for structural transformation in Africa and beyond.
