The governments of Ghana and South Africa have agreed on a visa waiver, allowing citizens of both countries to travel visa-free. According to Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, this agreement covers holders of ordinary passports and will permit travellers to transit through, depart from, and stay in both countries for a cumulative period of up to 90 days without the need for a visa. The agreement is set to take effect from November 1, 2023.
This move follows South Africa’s similar agreement with Kenya in January of the same year. South Africa has been gradually reducing visa restrictions for African nations, eliminating previous requirements for travellers to show proof of sufficient funds and return flight tickets.
South African passport holders enjoy visa-free travel to 73 countries worldwide, and with this new agreement, more people are expected to travel between South Africa and Ghana. It’s seen as a significant step towards promoting increased unity and prosperity across the African continent, enabling easier travel, trade, and cultural interaction.
