The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved six international routes for United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) as part of the Bilateral Air Service Agreements (BASAs) between Nigeria and the governments of these countries. The approved international routes are:
- United Kingdom (UK)
- United States of America (USA)
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Rome, Italy
- United Arab Emirates (UAE)
- Dublin, Ireland
The approval was conveyed through a letter from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, dated September 8, 2023, and signed by Hassan Ejibunu, the Director of Air Transport Management.
The letter advised the airline to liaise with the Civil Aviation Authorities of the mentioned countries for necessary documentation before commencing scheduled flight operations.
UNA was also reminded to comply with Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulation (CARs) 2023 Part 18.511 and liaise with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to fulfil any additional requirements.
The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development communicated this approval to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for further necessary actions.
This designation of UNA to these international routes is expected to enhance reciprocity for Nigeria and its carriers, addressing concerns from aviation stakeholders about BASA imbalances.
BASA agreements are subject to negotiation between two nations, and the approval of these routes reflects the ongoing efforts to expand Nigeria’s air travel connectivity and opportunities for its carriers.
