The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has initiated Operation Air Clean, a strategic reform aimed at elevating transparency, combating corruption, and enhancing passenger experiences at Nigeria’s busiest airports, namely the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) and the General Aviation Terminal (GAT). This initiative, backed by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo (SAN), is a proactive response to longstanding inefficiencies and challenges, especially as the year-end travel peak approaches.
Core Features of the Initiative
1. Elimination of Joint Inspection Tables
Previously, joint inspection tables, managed by multiple security agencies, led to delays and instances of corruption. Under Operation Air Clean, FAAN has replaced these with modern, intelligence-driven systems:
Advanced Technology: Scanners and passenger profiling tools are now in use.
Camera-Based Monitoring: Designated observation zones ensure passenger treatment is fair and accountable.
2. Improved Passenger Processing
To reduce delays, FAAN has introduced collaborative measures:
Integrated Counters: DSS and Immigration Service personnel now work together at shared counters for faster document checks.
Streamlined Customs Procedures: Customs officers have been moved to Aviation Security (AVSEC) screening areas to facilitate efficient money declarations.

3. Transparent Search Procedures
Search processes have been restructured to enhance transparency:
Dedicated Profiling Rooms: Secondary screenings now occur in specialized rooms at Terminals 1 and 2.
Real-Time Oversight: Profiling rooms display officer names and contact details on real-time screens for accountability.
4. Agency Role Redefinition
Roles of airport security agencies have been clarified for better efficiency:
NDLEA and AVSEC Collaboration: The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency works with AVSEC to enhance passenger screening and conduct random checks.
DSS Patrols: DSS officers now patrol departure areas, increasing security and reassuring passengers.
